A company named LiftPort aims to fund the first stage of the elevator to space project through Kickstarter. The first flight is to shot to the Moon, as LiftPort counts it feasible to one day build the elevator on the Moon due to the suitable lunar conditions. So far, the company has operated 1,000-foot climbs with their space elevator technology. Presently they are looking to fund development and testing of an Earth-based “tethered tower,” a two-kilometer cable supported by helium balloons and climbed by an experimental elevator car (or robotM). After they are done with the two-kilometer ascend, LiftPort will carry out a three to five-kilometer climb, involving dealing with subzero temperatures effects on battery packs, lubricants and motors.
