Karen I Man Cheong transformed the idea of the Davy lamp created in 1815, into a new kitchen appliance, Fiery (2012 Electrolux Design Lab entry). Fiery provides two main functions: igniter and fire protection, using the feature of fine fire mesh. Gas flames would not go through thin wire mesh because the metal draws heat from the flame, lowering the temperature of the gas below ignition point. The working process is easy and impressive: just pour some liqueur into a pan/plate, cover it with “Fiery”, press a button “Turn on the fire”, remove “Fiery” while the fire burns off and serve. Bon appétit!
