Inspired by the design of ship’s sails, Tunisian green energy startup Saphon Energy has designed a new bladeless wind turbine project, called “Saphonian”. The company claims, this turbine will double efficiency in converting the kinetic energy of the wind into electricity in comparison to a usual wind turbine and besides fewer costs will be needed for its operation. At present there’s a burning need for wind turbines generating renewable energy and avoiding the use of rotating blades, which cause noise pollution and are harmful to birds. To utilize the wind’s energy the Saphonian turbine utilizes a Zero-Blade Technology. The company reports that discarding the blades, hub and gearbox needed in a traditional wind turbine will lead to savings in manufacturing. Having got an international patent in March, Saphon Energy aims at putting this technology to market and is looking for collaboration with a manufacturer. You can get more information about this project from the promo video.
