Canon has finally unveiled its US plans on the Mixed Reality Head-Mounted Display at the event held in Manhattan’s Classic Car Club and presented the more streamlined MREAL name for the system. The headset can create detailed simulations and present them to the wearer as if they were highly detailed objects. The MREAL system is definitely industry-oriented, targeting product prototypers with an augmented reality system that lets designers interact with computer-generated versions of their creations before making them a reality. The MREAL System for Mixed Reality creates a video of one’s surroundings using a pair of cameras positioned in front of the wearer’s eyes, which is combined with computer-generated graphics. The result is displayed on a pair of small monitors to create three-dimensional images. As for the potential users for the product are automotive designers, manufacturers, university researchers and museum exhibit curators. The MREAL system is scheduled for the first release in March and will cost $125,000 for the headset and accompanying system, with $25,000 in annual maintenance. According to Canon, SDK will be opened up its SDK to developers, so applications will only grow.
