Magnificent Singapore’s landmark Gardens by the Bay Got Building of the Year Award
This year at the World Architecture Festival World Building of the Year award went to Wilkinson Eyre Architects for their design of the Cooled Conservatories (built on reclaimed land) are claimed to be the largest controlled-climate greenhouses on earth. Landscape architect Grant Associates and engineers Atelier One and Atelier Ten are of great importance in the creation of the stunning architecture project. Wilkinson Eyre applied a multitude of innovative sustainability techniques to the construction of the two huge greenhouses, Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, that nurture a a great many of endangered plants from Mediterranean, Semi-Arid, and Tropical Montaine climates. The gridshell structures are fitted with a special kind of glass, keeping optimum lighting for the plants, yet mollifying excess solar gain for the plants not to get too hot. The team of architects managed to design a project, where only the occupied zones of the domes have to be cooled, thus reducing energy consumption. Energy to power the Conservatories is generated on site by the solar Supertrees that have alredy gained much attention, and a Combined Heat Power (CHP) steam turbine, fed by horticultural waste from the Gardens and other parks near Singapore.
