Kidtrack is a biometric ridership tracking system, which identifies children riding school busses by reading the unique vein patterns of their palms. Kidtrack was developed by Fujitsu Frontech North America in cooperation with IT/logistics company T&W Operations to keep track of which children are on which buses, and where. The Real-Time data and Historical reporting clearly communicates bus location and riders boarding and getting off the bus. This system features non-invasive, spoof-proof palm vein technology. The scanner is located in a rugged urethane housing designed for proper hand placement, as well as easy access by a child and high visibility for the driver. When boarding or getting off a Kidtrack-equipped bus, children scan their palm across one of Fujitsu’s biometric PalmSecure readers, which takes about one second. The device uses infrared light to image the unique vein pattern of their palm; it then establishes their identity by cross-referencing that pattern against a secure database of pre-registered users’ patterns. After scanning, the data is sent to a cloud-based server and in case a child go missing, authorized administrators can check the Kicktrack website to see when, where and if they did indeed catch the bus, where the bus is at the moment, along with when and where they got off. The Kidtrack system also locally stores tracking data on the bus itself, this eliminates data loss in rural areas, times of severe weather, or any situation where a cellular signal is weak or unavailable. Of course this system can seem helpful, though it can’t prevent cases, when children get off at the wrong stop, they are kidnapped from the bus stop or the bus is hijacked.
