The Future by Airbus presents the company’s vision on sustainable aviation in 2050 in the latest instalment, Smarter Skies. Airbus focuses its attention on efficient operations both in the air and on the ground, introducing some innovations, which could help meet the future industry growth in a sustainable way.
Airbus aims at optimizing Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems: changing infrastructure and organization might reduce traffic jams and delays, more direct routes could cut travel time (flights in Europe and the U.S. could be around 13 minutes shorter). If 30 million flights per year were considered, such optimization could save around nine million tons of excess fuel annually, equating to over 28 million tons of avoidable CO2 emissions and a saving of five million hours of excess flight time.
The initial power required for a passenger plane to take-off is needed for a short part of the total flight, thus a ground-based system ‘eco-climb’ might provide the necessary propulsion. Airbus assumes, that the eco-climb system will movie into position automatically and assist passenger planes to take-off on shorter runways (the obvious advantage is a more rapid climb to reach efficient cruising altitude quicker than before).
Besides Airbus stresses the benefits of a free-glide approach that could both reduce emissions during the overall descent and limit the noise, cause there will be no need for engine thrust or air breaking.
