According to the recently filed patent Samsung is working on the Action Unit (AU) Detector. Facial Action Coding System (FACS) utilizing the Action Units, is nothing but a coding system that distinguishes emotions of anger, fear, sadness, happiness, surprise, and disgust based on the contractions of a user’s facial muscles. The researchers Sudha Velusamy, Hariprasad Kannan, Balasubramanian Anand and Anshul Sharma who were working on Samsung’s emotion recognition technology combined 30 such units together forming a string, each string being mapped to a mentioned human emotion. The hardware mentioned to be used for the system is a memory to store instructions and a processor to evaluate and match the Action Units.
