Unusual Silverback Robot (+VIDEO)
A new conceptual robot designed by Jason Falconer for Icarus Technology’s stands a good chance for entering DARPA’s Robotics Challenge program, planned for 2014. The primary goal of this program is to develop ground robotic capabilities to execute complex tasks in dangerous, degraded, human-engineered environments. It will focus on robots that can utilize available human tools, ranging from hand tools to vehicles. Unlike most robots that will probably be designed as humanoids, Icarus Technology stakes on an ape-like robot, Silverback robot, which can stand up like a person, walk on all fours for better stability on rough terrain and also walk with inverted knees on flexible but strong carbon fiber planks.
