Deep Space Industries, a private start-up, is going to launch the first commercial campaign to explore the small asteroids that pass the Earth. It will send a fleet of spacecrafts into the solar system to gather and process asteroids for use in space and to benefit Earth. The launch of the ‘FireFly’ spacecraft is scheduled for 2015. The estimated duration of the space voyages will be from two to five months. In 2016 DSI will send out larger DragonFly, 70 lb spacecrafts, that will mine asteroids and bring back samples to Earth. DSI plans to undertake full-scale commercial asteroid harvesting missions utilizing Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Proton and Ariane 5. It is reported, that more than 900 new asteroids that pass near Earth are discovered every year. The company’s CEO David Gump claims, that metals and fuel from asteroids can expand the in-space industries of this century. DSI also plans to develop technologies that transform raw asteroid material into complex metal parts. In future it will harvest asteroids for metals and other building materials, to construct large communications platforms to replace communications satellites. The company is currently looking for customers and sponsors to be part of its space projects and to open space to humanity.
